The accompanying graphic (from New Scientist, April 19, 2008) shows the response of the population of various countries to a question concerning evolution theory. As can be seen, within the U.S. – supposedly the world’s most scientifically aware country – some 40% of the inhabitants do not believe that humans are descended from an earlier species of animal. What is probably even more disturbing is that only 40% believe that this is the case.
